Job Title: Information Technology Manager - WPXI TV
Position Overview
WPXI TV, a Cox Media Group (CMG) station in Pittsburgh, PA, is seeking an experienced, highly motivated I.T. Manager. Operating in the nation’s 26th largest television market, this hands-on leadership role manages the station's entire computing environment, localized server architecture, high-security network perimeters, and integrated broadcast-I.T. ecosystems.
The I.T. Manager ensures 24/7/365 operational continuity for our live news, production, and multi-platform digital channels. The ideal candidate will blend advanced systems administration with deep technical knowledge of specialized, automated broadcast television environments. This role reports directly to the Director of Engineering and works in tandem with the station's local engineering team and CMG corporate technology group.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Broadcast-I.T. Integration & Support: Maintain high-level technical oversight, provisioning, and daily troubleshooting for mission-critical newsroom and automation systems including Avid, iNews, Grass Valley Ignite, Harmonic, Crispin, Chyron, and Wide Orbit.
- Infrastructure & Storage Management: Administer and optimize local storage and server environments, directly overseeing the station’s virtualized server platforms (VMware/Hyper-V) and high-capacity NetApp network-attached storage (NAS/SAN) infrastructure.
- Network & Security Enforcement: Serve as the local gatekeeper for network security. Manage, patch, and monitor the station's Fortinet infrastructure (firewalls, switches, and secure access points), ensuring strict adherence to CMG corporate cybersecurity mandates.
- Systems & Automation Administration: Direct the optimization of Microsoft enterprise environments, Active Directory, endpoint systems, and localized automated script pipelines to minimize operational overhead and drive reliability.
- User Support Leadership: Manage the local help desk workflow, ensuring high-priority, zero-downtime technical support for live control rooms, field news crews, digital production teams, sales, and administrative staff.
- Disaster Recovery & Redundancy: Formulate, test, and manage strict local business continuity blueprints, ensuring off-site cloud backups and local hardware redundancies preserve the on-air and digital stream integrity during critical weather or emergency events.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Broadcast Engineering, or equivalent combined professional experience.
- 5+ years of experience in systems administration, network engineering, or I.T. infrastructure management, with a proven track record working inside a high-pressure, live broadcast television or multi-platform media environment.
- Technical Proficiencies:
- Advanced administration of Microsoft Server, Active Directory, Group Policy, and desktop operating systems.
- Strong knowledge of virtualization technologies (VMware Horizon/vSphere) and enterprise storage management (NetApp solutions).
- Profound understanding of core networking concepts (TCP/IP, VLAN segmentation, routing protocols, and QoS settings for media over IP).
- Must be willing to participate in an on-call emergency rotation encompassing nights, weekends, and holiday coverage to support a continuous news cycle.
Preferred Qualifications
- Security & Networking Certifications: Active certifications in corporate networking and perimeter protection (e.g., Fortinet Network Security Expert (NSE), Cisco CCNA, or Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert).
- Industry Accreditations: Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE) certifications—specifically the Certified Broadcast Networking Engineer (CBNE) or Certified Broadcast Networking Technologist (CBNT)—are highly valued.
